“G” is for God

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

Dana and Mike

I’m still in Texas, and although it was day later than we’d imagined, we’re home from the hospital after my grandson’s birth with a healthy baby and mother. God is good. I always catch myself when I say that. “God is good.” Isn’t God always good? Inherently good? His goodness never changes, but I don’t think we automatically think of His goodness when–for example–we are being frisked by TSA or when we miss a connection after traveling all day. “I missed my flight?! God is good!” But I do notice …read more

“F” is for Freedom

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

Jarret and allie

As I sit in a birthing room at Midland Memorial Hospital, I find myself with more than enough time to re-enter the A-Z Blogging Challenge. NOT that I ever withdrew, although it would APPEAR that I was AWOL since my busy April turned this blog into a non-productive alphabetical wasteland. A couple good things have happened, though: I flew safely to both Portland, Oregon and Midland, Texas (mostly without incident)—which bears noting because traveling, for me, can go wrong. Murphy’s Law wrong. In fact, Murphy is normally traveling WITH me …read more

“E” is for Education

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

early convention

Today flew by in a flurry of appointments and responsibilities, and now nighttime is already locking up and getting ready to call it a day. And I, loyal reader, am only now sitting down to write my “E” blog post. Writers are a weird breed of idea-havers. We have ideas for stories littering our desks, written in margins, saved as notes in our phones, or (dangerously) stuck in our heads. All we need is time, we say, TIME to let the ideas come to life, to let our characters live …read more

“D” is for Determination

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

Dana martin bakersfield

As it turns out, I’m pretty determined, right? Think of it: This is Day 4 of the blogging challenge, and I’ve made it. Time to celebrate with a DRINK. Easy, girl…the alphabet has another 22 letters after this. I like how some of you have taken an active interest in my challenge, even offering suggestions for words beginning with C, T, and now with D: Donuts, Dork, Delirious, and Doing the Boss (although that one was quickly withdrawn for obvious reasons). Inasmuch as these words undoubtedly deserve a blog post …read more

“C” is for Conflict

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

Today’s letter o’ the day is C, and when I began writing today, my word was different, but in the post I started, I used the word “conflict” and recognized the inevitability and unavoidability of conflict in business, so I changed my letter “c” mid-stream. There’s all sorts of places you can find conflict in business, but I have only 45 minutes to write today, so let’s see how far I get. Once upon a time, I worked at a haunted house attraction, where I was the owner’s right hand, …read more

“B” is for Boss Babes

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

Literally, not 24 hours have passed since writing my “A” blog post, and I’m already back at the computer working on the letter B. This is significant only because a) I have a million other things to do, and b) I haven’t been writing lately with any regularity, so what used to come easily to me is now like running a marathon the day after giving birth to quadruplets: Pure. Dumb. Effort. If this is your first stop, my challenge is to write 26 posts on the same theme, each …read more

“A” is for Adventure

A-Z Blogging Challenge 2018

adventuretime entertainment

As I tread lightly into the A-Z Blogging Challenge this year, I have a plan–sort of–for the direction of my posts, and if you saw my teaser a couple weeks ago, my theme is “Business.” I know I risk losing three of you who’ve come here thinking I’m the Steve Jobs of Bakersfield, Calif., and will be sharing all the secrets to my success. I don’t want to blow the surprise, but I’m not rich and my companies haven’t made Fortune 500; my “office” used to be a dining room. …read more

Theme Reveal: A-Z Blogging Challenge

Am I crazy? The answer is always yes.

a-z blogging challenge

I have a new grandbaby due in April, a 7-month old grandbaby who owns me, a grown son making his way toward the pitching mound for the Oakland Athletics, two upcoming haunted house conventions AND a burgeoning business that requires my full-time attention BUT have also decided to join the A-Z Blogging Challenge again this year. Today is the day we reveal our theme. Business. (Oh, geez that sounds boring, but I won’t post it if it is. Promise.) My topics won’t teach you (much), but hopefully they will make …read more

“A” is for Anita Hill

A-Z Blogging Challenge

This is an open letter to Anita Hill: Dear Professor Hill, As I watched your interview this morning on The Today Show, I was struck anew by your contribution to my life and the lives of women across the United States. You became the voice for sexual harassment happening across the country; your conversations with Clarence Thomas replicated water cooler talk everywhere. In 1991, I was a 22-year old secretary working in a commercial real estate firm in Southern California. And I was you. Because of you, my age group …read more

“B” is for Boots & Bakersfield

A-Z Blogging Challenge

As I tentatively enter the A-Z blogging challenge for 2016, let me admit two things: I have not written with any regularity since I completed this challenge in 2013, and, true to form, today I skipped A and went straight to B because I’m already running behind. Judging by the calendar, April 7 should be letter F at least. The point is: Don’t expect me to come flying out of the gate with guns ablazin’. After a long absence from writing, it may take me a while to get back …read more
